Surface design is color, texture and pattern applied to surfaces within the man-made environment. I began my professional design career designing and applying finishes to enhance furniture and walls in both commercial and residential spaces. This introduction to design thinking created a love that I hold dear to this day. For each project my objective was to produce not only a physically beautiful end product but one that was able to be applied on a mass scale by various hands, while maintaining a necessary consistency. Finishes also had to achieve the desired effect while fulfilling a set of parameters often times presented by an architect or interior designer.
As I've evolved as a designer and have gravitated towards design projects that are more inclusive of my passions, I've found that many of the skills I'd learned back then apply to my projects today. Good design principles transcend a specific field.
